How to Go Green in Clarkstown and Save Money
In times of pollution, a depleted ozone layer and increasing rates of global warming, business, individuals, families and even whole countries are searching for ways to go green and help preserve the planet. Citizens across the United States are pushing to be more environmentally conscious and friendly, and with Clarkstown going green, there are many different ways to do your part to save the planet.
?
Clarkstown going green means saving money by saving energy in any of the following ways:
?
- Look at where your thermostat is set in the summer and winter months. By turning it down a few degrees when it?s cold and up a few degrees when it?s warm, you?ll save a lot more money than you think.
- An easy way to keep Clarkstown going green is to switch your regular light bulbs for the compact fluorescent types. They come in different shapes and a variety of wattages. The light bulbs may cost a little more than the standard kinds, but they use a lot less energy and will save on energy costs.
- Rather than washing your clothes in warm water, try using cold water. Up to 80 percent of the energy cost of doing laundry comes from heating the water!
?
Another simple way to keep Clarkstown going green is to save water. There are a few different ways this can be accomplished:
?
- Take shorter showers and avoid using the bathtub unless you absolutely need to.
- Replace your current showerhead with one of the low-flow variety. These push less water out, making for great energy savings, as well as less wasted water during the times the shower is in use.
- Faucet aerators are an inexpensive way to help keep Clarkstown going green. By installing one of these on each of the faucets in your home, you can save on energy costs because less water pressure is used and the aerator helps to conserve heat and water.
?
Clarkstown going green also means taking further measures to help save the planet. Why not bike or walk to work instead of driving?? The exercise can help you get back into shape while you?re doing your part to help the environment. How about checking to see if your workplace allows telecommuting? There is also the option of moving closer to your workplace. The changes you make don?t have to be large ones. Consistent small changes will help the environment while helping save on your energy costs.

White Paper: The Business Case for Social Customer Service | The ...
As we?ve highlighted in our recent social customer service posts, while most brands have now grasped the value of social media marketing, very few are investing properly in genuine social customer service.?It?s timely, then, that with The Social Customer 2012?(London) just days away, immediate future?have published a free white paper highlighting the costs and benefits of implementing social customer service.
Adam Lewis, Managing Consultant at the London social media agency, put it this way:??There?s often a fear that social will open up Pandora?s Box for customer service teams - an unquantifiable wave of hard-to-handle customer interactions?.
While there are lots of reasons why organisations haven?t adopted social customer services, scalability, or the feared lack of it, may well be the #1 reason why ? as?Frank Eliason?is quoted as saying in the Holmes Report today ? ?social customer service has been a complete failure?.
So is this fear well-founded?
At my?Monitoring Social Media Boot-camp in 2010 Giles Palmer, MD of the UK monitoring company,Brandwatch, explained how, out of 100,000 mentions that they monitored for a client over 6 months, they highlighted about 4,500 and the client ended up responding to less than 2,000. Anyone who understands social media listening will echo this finding. If you?ve got smart analysts, you don?t need to deal with noise.
I suspect, though, the fear is more about attracting, or even generating, thousands more social media queries simply by offering a social media customer service channel. Yet this smacks of brands putting their head in the sand. As immediate future point out ?In this multichannel world [customers] expect more support through channels that are convenient to them, not you?. And to hammer this message home, they add ?The fastest growing age group of social media users between now and 2015 will be 65-75 year olds?.
You can download a free copy of immediate future?s white paper here.
immediate future?s managing director, Katy Howell, will be speaking at The Social Customer 2012 in London this Thursday. Our impressive speaker line-up features Frank Eliason (Citibank), plus senior executives from Spotify, BT, British Gas, First Direct, Expedia, Everything Everywhere, Telefonica and ACCA. Content Marketing for Professional Services: Does It Cannibalize ...
Guest post by Joe Pulizzi, founder of the Content Marketing Institute?and?Junta42. Joe evangelizes content marketing around the world through keynotes, articles, tweets and his books,Managing Content Marketing and?Get Content Get Customers. If you want to get on his good side, send him something orange. For more on Joe, check out his?personal site or follow him on Twitter?@juntajoe.
In my second trip down to SXSW, I had the distinct pleasure of presenting with Jay Baer, my good friend, a CMI consultant, and one of the best social media minds in the game. The title of our session was, ?Does Free Content Cannibalize Your Paid Consulting??, and it focused on content marketing strategies and tactics for professional services companies.
As a good content marketing best practice, we?ve put together the highlights of the presentation below, along with the downloadable SlideShare version.
Is content marketing required for professional services companies?
?Technology is shifting the power away from the editors, the publishers, the establishment, the media elite. Now it?s the people who are in control.? ?Rupert Murdoch
In the past, there were barriers to entry for any non-media company, let alone paid consultants or professional services companies, to get traction from its content marketing. These were:
- Death of the intermediary: Although media placement and coverage can still be incredibly effective, it is no longer necessary. We can now communicate directly with our customers and prospects, if we have compelling and relevant information to share with them (can you say opt-in?).
- Access to talent: In the very recent past, it was challenging for professional services companies to attract the kind of journalistic talent necessary to create and distribute truly remarkable content marketing. That is no longer the case. More and more journalists are making the leap over to the dark side (non-media side) where, frankly put, more resources and opportunities present themselves for great content creators.
- Viable technology: You, me, and the sign post can all create a blog in five seconds or less. Social media channels abound for publishing purposes. Marketing automation services are available to all. There are no more excuses.
The recognition that we are media companies
Professional services companies need to realize that they are in competition with not only other consultants in your space, but also media companies in your industry, Google, and the billboard down the street. That means we need to develop and distribute content that is as good or better than anything else in our industry to attract and retain customers.
So, we are indeed all publishers today.
There is only one thing that separates the content developed by a media company and content developed by brands like Intel, John Deere, or LEGO: How the money comes in.
For a media company, content is created in order to make money directly off the creation of content through paid content sales (direct purchase of content) or advertising sales (someone sponsors the content that is created, like we see in newspapers and magazines).
For a non-media company, content is created not to profit directly from the content, but, rather, indirectly by attracting and retaining customers.
In all other respects, the content creation activities in both types of companies are generally the same. Both needs to be authentic and credible. This is important to realize, in that non-media brands are competing with traditional media for attention and retention, just like you compete with the other businesses in your field.
The three-legged success stool
In order to be found in search engines, to drive inbound leads for your organization, and to be successful with your social media strategy, you need remarkable storytelling. Simply put, your content marketing strategy must come before your social media strategy.
You would think since more professional services companies are realizing this, and that the barriers to entry are gone, that content marketing success stories for professional services companies would abound. Unfortunately (or fortunately), most paid consultants and services companies now realize that content marketing is really hard.
Recent Content Marketing Institute and MarketingProfs research shows us that the biggest content marketing challenge for B2B marketers is developing content that truly engages customers and prospects.
For this strategy to work, it takes patience, commitment, and excellence at the craft. Professional services companies need to shift their thinking and realize that, in order to be the leading experts in their industry and get online referrals, they need to be creating consistent, valuable, and compelling content.
The Content Marketing Institute story
Although we do offer some paid sponsorship opportunities as part of the Institute and our premier event, Content Marketing World, the majority of our online leads come in for our consulting practice, headed by Robert Rose.
In our session, Jay called this strategy a ?Trojan Horse Effect?, where we look and feel like a media company, all to generate interest around the consulting practice. Jay may indeed be right.
Since launching CMI in May of 2010, we now average nearly 100,000 unique visitors a month on our sites. We have over 70 active content contributors to CMI, producing two posts per day around ?how-to? content marketing as well as content marketing news. Over the past three months, we?ve received dozens of qualified inbound leads into our consulting division, six of which are Fortune 500 companies.
The best part is that these companies come to us ready to buy, and our sales cycle has dropped, in some cases, to just a few days.
6 concerns/myths about consultant?s content marketing
But while our belief is that giving away your knowledge (as much as possible) leads to substantially more opportunities, how far should a professional services company or paid consultant open the Kimono? Let?s discuss.
- My clients don?t consume online content: We hear this all the time. A paid consultant will say that they target CEOs, who don?t use search engines or social media. Recent Google research tells us that the average consumer engages in over 10 sources of information before making a buying decision. Also, according to research from Doremus and the Financial Times, over 60 percent of senior executives read blogs, watch online video, view webcasts, and use professional networking sites like LinkedIn.
- We don?t have time to create content: Online content marketing is the ultimate informational annuity. For example, Jay shared his statistics on just one post on social media strategy he created almost three years ago. The post still attracts an average of 300 people per day (to just that one post) and has led to multiple pieces of business for Jay.
- We can just do social media, we don?t need content: Jay?s Content Marketing Necessity Scale says it all. If people are already talking about you online in the right places, you don?t need as much original content as those that aren?t yet invited to the party. Frankly, if you want to be shared and talked about in social media, you need some amazing content to make your social media go. As Jay says, ?Content is fire. Social media is gasoline.?
- We can just do a blog: Today, a blog is just a ticket to the ball game. Sixty-five percent of B2B companies have blogs today (according to CMI and MarketingProfs research). In order to be the leading expert for your industry, you need to take story ideas and adapt them to channels, like blowing a dandelion in the wind. For example, with the Content Marketing Playbook, although the eBook was the main content product, we produced a SlideShare version, multiple podcasts, multiple blog posts, a news release, an enewsletter version, snippets in our print magazine, Chief Content Officer, guest blogs, promotions on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, and more.
- We?ll give away all our secret sauce: Contrary to what some people believe, a prospect doesn?t read one blog post and buys on the spot. Through our content, we develop attention, then interest, then action. So you?ve got to work it by solving the pain points of your customers. Yes, you may give away your secrets, but having a grocery list doesn?t make you a chef. Those customers that want to take your advice and do it themselves?? fine. Those are not the kind of customers you want. What you need to do is show your expertise and insight, and have smart executives recognize your talent.
- We shouldn?t talk about price in our content: Jay and I call this the Marcus Sheridan effect. Marcus is owner of River Pools and Spas and is now a prominent marketing speaker and consultant. Marcus was able to sell more fiberglass swimming pools than anyone in the country by sharing everything, including specifics on price. Just type in anything around pricing and fiberglass pools into Google? Marcus always comes up and dominates the search rankings. This same philosophy has also worked in his marketing practice. If you can?t talk specific pricing, at least talk about the dynamics that go into pricing. This is your competitive advantage waiting to happen.
4 things to know before you dive into content marketing
- Know your niche: Where can you be the leading expert in the world for your specific buyers? It?s better to go smaller and broaden out once you dominate your niche. Think as if you were a trade magazine. Vertical is in, horizontal is out.
- Know your audience: Jay?s practice targets the social media practitioner, and has truly focused on this with this Social Pros podcast series. He doesn?t want all people interested in social media, just practitioners. It?s an important distinction. The same goes for OpenView Venture Partners [disclaimer: I am an advisor], who is targeting successful technology entrepreneurs looking for capital to grow, not just any entrepreneur.
- Know your budget: Just read this budget and content marketing investment post for agencies from Jay. Enough said.
- Know your metrics: Here are the four key metrics for agencies, as well as a content marketing ROI analysis considering the three kinds of measurement indicators for your business.
Thanks again to everyone who came to the presentation. Here are the slides below to pass around at your discretion.

Finance And Business | Shopping and Product Reviews: The ...
When purchasing items either online or on an actual shop, it is best if you already know what you are getting in line with the product you wish to spend your money with. Otherwise, spend a minute or two to perform product review before splurging your money on shopping.
Some may think that purchasing luxury briefcases or leather briefcases are not as complicated as it is. All you have to do is go to the shop, pick which one you like, or heed the suggestions from the salesperson or from your close friend. Wrong. Everything you want to buy ought to be double-checked first.
Shopping and product reviews are twins, they should go together. Going shopping without the aid of product reviews can lead you to a rather disastrous purchasing experience.
Let us go back to purchasing simple luxury briefcases and leather briefcases. Without prior knowledge on the things that you would want to purchase, you may be fooled by fake retailers. It is a known fact that frauds are all over the place. Everyone knows that. What you don?t know is how to determine whether what you are buying is an authentic leather therefore worthy of its skyrocketing price (leathers are expensive). But since you found time to search the net of what you are looking for, together with the information of how big is it, of the marks that can be found on its body, etc at least you have the knowledge of what to look for when buying the item.
Imagine not knowing all of the information. You went home with the package on your hands, thinking that you have in your possession something that is a bit expensive when actually what you had is close to a clone. Same goes with the price. Other stores take advantage of the lack of knowledge of their customers and would give a price way too expensive than the actual one.
With reviews, previous buyers? comments can help you decide whether your chosen product is worth it or would you rather choose a different one just because most of those who had it are saying it is not worth a penny. Prices, whether actual or approximates, are also posted to give you a hint of how much your target item costs.
If you are planning to purchase not so-cheap articles, surfing the net to look for reliable product reviews may the best thing to do. It is for your own protection still. If you can stay for a while adding friends and posting your hang-ups in social networking sites, guess you will also allot a time for this as well.
Product reviews are just safety measures a buyer should take seriously so that their money will not go to waste not to mention not be fooled by fakes masquerading themselves as store owners or retailers. Checking online will not take a lot of time. Shopping may be good, but it will be better once you are confident that what you have paid for is actually the same thing you always wanted to have and not just a poor copy of it.

Marine forensics expert Richard Woytowich seeks to vindicate Titanic survivors' account

New York City College of Technology
Brooklyn, NY -- On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking, marine forensics expert Richard Woytowich will present a paper re-interpreting the statements made by survivors at the 1912 official inquiries into the disaster.
Woytowich, a professor of computer engineering technology at New York City College of Technology (City Tech), will take into account what engineers and other technologists now know about how the ill-fated passenger liner broke apart on April 15, 1912. He will be presenting his research on April 4, 8 a.m., at the International Marine Forensics Symposium, to be held at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
A longtime resident of Eltingville, Staten Island, Woytowich has been studying how the ship sank since 1998. In 2007, working with technical historian Roy Mengot, he developed a computer model showing that the breakup of the ship could have started in the bottom structure rather than at the uppermost decks as was widely assumed. They wrote an article on this research, titled "The Breakup of Titanic: A Progress Report from the Marine Forensics Panel (SD-7)," which was published in the January 2010 issue of Marine Technology.
That work, in turn, was prompted by the release of photographs taken by an expedition to the wreck, in which the fractured edges of two pieces of the ship's bottom were shown. "When I saw the edges of the actual bottom pieces of the ship, I immediately felt that I was looking at the parts that failed first, not the parts that failed last," Woytowich notes.
Recently, he was motivated to re-evaluate the testimony of many of the Titanic survivors because their statements seemed to support this model better than the popular top-down breakup (depicted in the movie Titanic). (Only a few survivors including the ship's senior surviving officer testified that the ship sank intact.)
"Once we changed our mental image of the breakup, it might be possible to resolve the apparent conflicts in the survivors' testimony especially the conflict between those who said that the ship broke in two and those who said that the ship went down intact," Woytowich says. "A secondary goal was to use the survivors' statements to refine my reconstruction of the later stages of the ship's breakup."
Backed by forensic evidence, Woytowich hopes to help restore the credibility of the majority of the survivors, who testified that the ship broke in two. While they were not believed by the official inquiry, they were vindicated when the wreck was discovered lying in pieces on the bottom in 1985.
None of the survivors, however, reported seeing the ship split apart from the top down. When early analyses suggested that the breakup began at the upper edges of the hull, the reliability of all of the survivors' testimony was called into question.
But if, as Woytowich believes, the breakup started in the bottom structure, "then much of the process would have occurred near or below the surface of the water. The extent to which each survivor could see it would have depended on his or her location," he explains. "In that case, the apparent conflicts in testimony could be explained, and the credibility of all the survivors could be restored.
As Woytowich put it, "It's been 100 years since the sinking; it's time to set the record straight."
Woytowich has also presented on other aspects of the sinking of the Titanic, which was the largest ship of its time. In 2003, he presented a paper, "Riveted Hull Joint Design in RMS Titanic and Other Pre-WWI Ships," based on research he had conducted for the previous five years. His calculations showed that some of the joints involved in the iceberg impact were only about 27 percent as strong as the plates they connected.
His paper at the upcoming symposium, which runs from April 3-5, will not be the only presentation on the breakup of the Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage after hitting an iceberg. At least one other team of investigators will be presenting the results of their analysis of the ship. "I'm looking forward to an interesting discussion of our results," Woytowich says. "It may be that the information presented at this symposium will finally let us come to a consensus on how the ship broke up. But it is always possible that differences of opinion will remain."
Since it is likely that ships will continue to be damaged or sunk for as long as people sail the seas, the symposium will also look to the future, introducing a set of guidelines for forensic investigations. These guidelines will build on the work done by the members of the Marine Forensics Committee (the technical committee under whose auspices the symposium is being held, and of which Woytowich is a member), including the work done to investigate the sinking of the Titanic.

Pa. church conducts mock kidnapping on youth group
PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A church subjected members of a youth group to a mock kidnapping and interrogations without telling them it was staged, and the outraged mother of one 14-year-old girl has filed a complaint with police.
The pastor of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Middletown said the church is "so saddened" that the girl was traumatized at the Wednesday evening youth meeting.
But the pastor, John Lanza, said Friday there have been emails of support from other students at the central Pennsylvania church, 200 miles east of Pittsburgh, because the intent was to prepare them for what they might encounter as missionaries. He didn't disclose the names of those involved but said the mock kidnappers included an off-duty police officer and a retired Army captain.
"It was a youth event, to illustrate what others have encountered on a regular basis," he said, adding that the focus of the lesson was "the persecuted church" in other countries.
Lanza said there were about 17 students at the meeting and the mock kidnappers covered the students' heads, put them in a van and interrogated them. Neither the students nor their parents were told about the raid beforehand, he said, though it was discussed with the parents of one youth who might have health issues.
TV station WHTM interviewed the girl who complained.
"They pulled my chair out from underneath me, and then they told me to get on the ground," she told the station. "I had my hands behind my back. They said, 'Just do as I say, and you won't be hurt.'"
The girl said the teens were taken to the pastor's house, where it appeared he was being assaulted. Eventually, she said, the adults in charge revealed it was a staged event.
"They heard me crying," the girl said. "Why not right then and there tell us it was a joke, when you see me crying?"
Lanza said the church has conducted similar events at least twice before, adding that "there was much thought given to the safety aspect."
"If anyone was ever uncomfortable, they would be removed" from the exercise, Lanza said, though part of the idea was to shock the students with the experience.
Lower Swarta Township police Chief Richard Wiley declined to comment until an investigation into the raid is complete. The names of the mother and daughter who complained haven't been made public.
There could be consequences if the teens didn't know what was going to happen and didn't agree to be a part of the event, Dauphin County First Deputy District Attorney Fran Chardo said.
"It's extremely disturbing," Chardo told WHTM.
Tom Copeland, who studies international affairs and terrorism at Geneva College, a Beaver Falls school that emphasizes a "Christian worldview," questioned the wisdom of submitting a youth group to a mock kidnapping.
"It just seems inappropriate for that age group. You would think there would be permission from the parents," Copeland said, adding that he's never heard of anything like that happening at a church.
He said that while there have been highly publicized episodes of violence directed against Christian missionaries in other countries, it seems those countries' local religious groups are more at risk.
One security expert said role-playing training is sometimes conducted "at the quasi-military level" for groups that are going to work in war zones.
Daniel Karson, chairman of business intelligence and investigations at Kroll, a worldwide risk consulting company with headquarters in New York, said the idea of conflict zone training "is to acclimate someone to a possible situation that might arise." The training might involve everything from what items they should take to the country to a review of who they're meeting and security conditions there, he said.
Lanza said members of the church have made numerous mission trips overseas and have learned to be cautious. He said they were planning a trip to Mexico but reviewed current news and advisories and decided it was unsafe.
Lanza said he "would love to" apologize to the girl and her mother but feels he can't until the police investigation is done. He said the church wants to keep doing the program but would make changes.
"I would find a way that we could continue to keep the shock value," he said, "but I would find a way to inform the parents (beforehand)."

Video: Kenny Florian and Georges St. Pierre in epic battle
While Georges St. Pierre is sidelined by a knee injury and Kenny Florian is retired after a back injury, the competitive spirit in each fighter has not died. They still feel the need to fight, even when it's just a thumb war.
Update: If the video didn't work for you last time, try again. It's been replaced.
As a thumb war aficionado, I feel the need to point out that Florian cheated. He pulled away from GSP's hand to apply the finishing move.

Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints Head Coach, Suspended One Year for Bounty-Gate
The NFL has suspended New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton for one year without pay.
The harsh penalty comes down a few weeks after it was revealed that Payton's team conducted its own "bounty" program on defense in 2009, as players pooled their own money and awarded one another for leveling such fierce, often illegal hits that opponents would be carted off the field.
The Saints also lost two second round draft picks and Gregg Williams, the defensive coordinator at the time, has been suspended indefinitely from his new job with the Rams.
Said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement:
"We are all accountable and responsible for player health and safety and the integrity of the game. We will not tolerate conduct or a culture that undermines those priorities. No one is above the game or the rules that govern it. Respect for the game and the people who participate in it will not be compromised."
What do you think of Payton's punishment?

Anything about Pap tests along with other screening procedures: Although understanding the symptoms cancer can cause is important, nothing can replacement the screening tests we have available: the annual pelvic exam, which will range from the Pap test, bimanual exam, and recto-vaginal exam. These tests have the possibility to detect cancer before it causes symptoms. Women at high-risk for many cancers may be advised to produce other screening procedures, say for example a transvaginal ultrasound test or test. Something to make note of: Most the days, these symptoms are generated by something benign. So exactly how should we know when you should get medical attention without alarming ourselves unnecessarily? Remind yourself with this: Largest on your symptom, you deserve to be aware what produces it. uterine cancer symptoms is the most common coming from all gynecologic cancers. However there's an "up side": most uterine cancer comes with an obvious red light - abnormal bleeding. Cervical, vaginal, and (more rarely) ovarian cancer may also have bleeding being a symptom. Fallopian tube cancer is really a rare cancer, but bleeding is probably the main symptoms. Most of the time, this bleeding is situated post-menopausal women, where any bleeding should be reported with a doctor immediately. Endometrial hyperplasia, which is often a precursor to uterine cancer, also causes abnormal bleeding.
Bleeding between periods - Women of their childbearing years, and especially in the years before menopause, sometimes experience anovulatory menstrual cycles, which may cause bleeding between menstrual periods. If you have a lot more than 2 or 3 of which cycles, it ought to be reported to your doctor. Sometimes bleeding after menopause or between periods happens due to minor trauma, like sexual activity or douching.

Sil Lai Abrams Relationship and Domestic Abuse Expert | News One
Sil Lai Abrams is likely one of the most ?got-it-together? sistas you would ever want to meet, if you ever had the pleasure of chatting with her.

She?s a leading relationship expert whose name has been featured on the mastheads of several prominent websites and magazines. She is a lecturer on domestic violence and a published author of ?No More Drama: Nine Simple Steps To Transforming A Breakdown Into A Breakthrough,? (Sepia Press Publishing).
Back in her younger days, she was cat walking on runways throughout Europe.

She also knows a thing (or 10) about drama.
In fact, Sil Lai says she was once the quintessential ?Drama Queen.? There was no situation, no matter how promising, in which she could not sabotage her emotional well-being and professional ascent. She stayed in relationships with men who were no good for her. And when Sil Lai wasn?t in a bad romantic relationship, she was sabotaging friendships with those who cared for her.
Her soft smile and casually professional demeanor, though, do not give off any hint of a someone who was battling emotional issues that contributed to her self-destructive behavior.? (Watch the video below to see her explain what those issues were.)
Sil Lai Abrams Talks About Her Book ?No More Drama?
At one point Sil Lai was involved in an abusive relationship that put her life and those of her children at risk. Eventually, she was able to overcome her self-destructive behavior and now devotes her time showing other women how to do the same. And when she is not touring the country speaking at women empowerment conferences, she pens a regular column for Ebony.com as their relationship expert.
An issue that is dear to her is that of domestic abuse. Having lived through and overcome an abusive relationship in the past, Sil Lai is a national speaker on the subject of domestic violence. She is also on the national advisory board of the National Domestic Abuse Hotline.
I sat down with Sil Lai one Saturday afternoon to discuss how she has learned to avoid emotionally and physically abusive relationships. Here are a few of her tips.
1) Get honest with yourself! Sometimes, denial plays a large part in a person staying in an unhealthy relationship. One of the tools that I have found worked for me in the past was to journal and keep a record of all of the instances of abuse, because it?s really easy to forget about what really happened. So getting honest with yourself is about getting truthful. Journaling and keeping a record is one of the first things you should do.
2) Create a safety plan. You can go online to websites, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline or Safe Horizon, and they will outline the specific steps you can take to create that safety plan to get out. Some of the things you can do is put aside money to escape, make copies of important documents (green card, passport, birth certificates for your children, etc.) and anything else you would need in order to start over.
3) Speak to friends. A family member, your pastor, law enforcement or? domestic violence agency and let them know what is going on because you have to get out of the bubble you?re in. And you can enlist them as support.
4) Sever all communication with your former partner. A lot of times, the woman wants to stay in touch. She feels compelled to because of the kids, because she loves him, she misses him, she still wants to try and negotiate some type of normal relationship with her batterer and that is a dangerous thing because he has one objective: to get you to come back. They?ll use a lot of emotional hooks to get you back, such as guilt and intimidation, anything to play on your heart strings to say OK: ?This time is going to be different. I?m coming back.? And trust me, if you do go back, it?s going to be that much harder to get out.
5) Get help. Get into therapy. In the African-American community, there is a huge taboo about it. People think that if you have an issue, you pray it out, but domestic violence is a family systems issue. It is something that is passed down from generation to generation, so if you?re going to break your own cycle of violence, you?ve got to get help.
